NHS Sustainability Day 2017

NHS Sustainability Day is a national ‘day of action’ initiated by the NHS Sustainable Development Unit.  The campaign encourages NHS Trusts around the country to promote low-carbon and sustainable activities and concludes with an awards ceremony later in the year, providing exemplary Trusts with an opportunity to showcase their positive contributions across multiple and integrated areas, including: waste management, procurement, transport and travel, food and behaviour change.

During this year’s NHS Sustainability Day 2017, held on 23rd March, our Energy and Sustainability Consultants supported multiple clients by:

  1. Planting a combined total of five trees and two plants. Trees not only remove harmful chemicals from the soil, but also reduce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change, thus helping to reduce air and water pollution. An average size tree creates sufficient oxygen in one year to provide oxygen for four people, and views of trees on NHS estates can support patient recovery rates, highlighting their benefits to both the environment and people.

  1. Holding informative sustainability roadshows across London and South East NHS Trusts, where we discussed sustainable healthcare, raised awareness of the work of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit, encouraged employees to make pledges for sustainable actions and sign up to their Sustainability Champions Network. These networks are key within any Trust to improve energy efficiency and support Trusts’ sustainability strategies and carbon reduction plans. The workforce of NHS Trusts around the country is the organisation’s greatest asset with vast opportunities to promote sustainability across hospitals and the wider community. Champions are invited to contribute ideas, suggestions and initiatives for improving their team’s environmental performance, and work in partnership with Low Carbon Europe consultants as part of our Mindset 2050 staff engagement behaviour change programmes.
